Yasmin Boland's Alternative HoroscopesYasmin Boland's Alternative Horoscopes

On 23 December Saturn moved into Sagittarius. Saturn is all about learning and challenges, and embodies the idea of 'what doesn't destroy me makes me stronger'. As Saturn moves through the zodiac, he activates different parts of our lives and teaches the different star signs the lessons we need to learn at this time. Worried that you haven't been the most attentive pupil? Don't fret – thanks to a retrograde move, Saturn will be returning to Scorpio for three months from June to September 2015. Look at it as a chance to resit the exam.

Here, astrologer Yasmin Boland takes you through what Saturn's been trying to teach you. And if you haven't made the grade, there are tips on where to put in some extra effort. Now pay attention…

ARIES

Your Lesson

The past few years have taught you some tough lessons about getting your finances in order. Any financial nightmares you've been through were down to Saturn, trolling his way through your money zone. The good news is that you'll have come out the other side, much older and wiser when it comes to dealing with cash. And let's face it, the wiser we are with cash, the more of it we tend to generate. Saturn has also slammed the brakes on some Ariens' sex lives, so if your bedroom activity has been off the boil, there's some good news – Saturn departs your sex zone for a few months at the end of December, and you'll be able to get stuck in once more.

More to learn?

If money issues are a worry, use the end of this cycle to consult a financial expert. Saturn insists that you mature financially, and getting advice when it's needed is a very mature thing to do.

Plus points

You and your libido will be reunited soon enough!

TAURUS

Your lesson

The lessons that Saturn has been sending you for the past couple of years are all about significant others in your life. Perhaps you broke up with someone who clearly wasn't right for you. The chances are that on some level, you taught each other some important lessons while you were together. Make your experiences mean something by taking on board what you've learned. If you're still attached but your relationship has been challenging, you can breathe a sigh of relief – the toughest part of your current love cycle is now over. Frankly, if you can both see in the new year together, you'll be able to make it through pretty much anything.

More to learn?

Use December to make a list of the highs and lows of your love life since 2012. Ask yourself what the universe might have been trying to teach you when things were difficult, then take a minute to feel grateful for the good times.

Plus points

You and your partner will find a greater mutual understanding.

GEMINI

Your lesson

For the past couple of years, boring old Saturn has been in a rather dull part of your chart – the bit that deals with work and routines. What you were supposed to learn through this tedium was the importance of discipline and sticking to routine, and that sometimes it's better to do things for others than it is to do things for yourself. And you were definitely meant to learn the importance of looking after yourself – body, mind and spirit.

More to learn?

If your life still feels like it's out of control, slow things down. Draw up some schedules between now and the end of the year, and take time to notice how much better life is when you stick to them. It's good to put your foot down now, because when Saturn changes signs in late December, he's going to be confronting you head on. Any steps you take this month will really start to pay off when Saturn returns in June.

Plus points

You'll get a kick out of putting other people before yourself.

CANCER

Your lesson

If you're a protective mother hen, one of the main things Saturn has tried to show you is that it's OK to worry about your loved ones – but letting your concerns rule your life or make you depressed does no one any good. For Crabs with a creative side, you've been shown that you need to be disciplined to achieve your dreams. There have also been lessons about your love life. If romance has been lacking, that can change now as Saturn departs this part of your chart.

More to learn?

If you're still fretting over family details, wise up. You have to let others take care of themselves. On the other hand, if you're too lax with your kids, try instilling some discipline. In love, commit to making time for romance. Creatively, make a list of all you want to achieve. By breaking it down into manageable parts, you're more likely to succeed.

Plus points

Once this cycle is over, your romantic life will feel lighter, issues around kids will fade and your creativity will hit a high.

LEO

Your lesson

Saturn has been in your family zone since 2012, so for Leos, life lessons have been focused on the people you live with, including flatmates. Hopefully you have been a rock for your family in their times of need. Or perhaps you have had to deal with a lot of negativity at home – and you've dealt with this magnificently. If you have managed to navigate a problematic living situation during these past two years, then pat yourself on the back. Any family or home lessons you've learned will stay with you for life.

More to learn?

If your home life or relations with your family are still difficult, ask yourself whether you need to give a bit more, rather than expecting others to do things for you. If there are financial issues linked to your living situation, now is a very good time to talk to your bank manager about them.

Plus points

It's not fun, but Saturn will reward you every time you tackle the difficult things.

VIRGO

Your lesson

The past few years have been about you learning to train your brain. The words 'positive thinking' are bandied around a lot these days, but that has been your main lesson. Were you able to overcome your tendency to worry and expect the worst? Have you been able to discipline yourself to think more positively? Have you also realised how tough it is on those you love when you're critical all the time? Now you can put these lessons into practice in 2015.

More to learn?

If you still find yourself thinking negatively a lot of the time and expecting bad things to happen, then you need to work on this some more. The same goes if you are hard on people who don't manage to live up to your rigorous standards and your sometimes rather demanding expectations. Stop making yourself and everyone around you miserable by expecting everything to be perfect.

Plus points

Your life will improve as soon as you lighten up.

SAGITTARIUS

Your lesson

The past few years have been all about learning to face your fears. Have you managed it? Saturn has been on your tail since 2012, bringing up every fear he could think of – because when we face our fears, we can get rid of them. So be honest with yourself. Write down one thing you're afraid of or worried about. Ask yourself where it came from, and write that down, too. Note why you believe this fear could come to pass. Now write a new sentence starting with the words, 'The truth is…' and put down the reality about your fear. This is a very powerful tool.

More to learn?

Do this exercise until you can see that your fear is all in your mind. It doesn't keep you safe. Themore anxieties you can get rid of before Saturn enters your sign this month, the more productive and constructive his visit will be.

Plus points

Work through this, and Saturn's stay could be the making of you.

CAPRICORN

Your lesson

As a Capricorn, you're always learning, but the particular focus for the past two years has been on how to win friends and keep them. You've also been sent some messages about not judging people too harshly. Saturn has spent the last few years making it obvious to you just who your real friends are. Hopefully you've been able to cut the ties with anybody who has been false or disloyal. Friendships that have survived this powerful cycle can survive anything and will probably be with you for life.

More to learn?

It's better to be lonely every once in a while than be with people who make you like yourself less. Likewise, if you're a bit too hard on mates, consider a spiritual practice like yoga or meditation. This will help you be more Zen and less judgemental. Try it!

Plus points

Your friendships should be rock solid at the end of this cycle.

LIBRA

Your lesson

The challenge in the past two years has been to learn to love yourself and realise that you're a good person. It's also about learning to believe in yourself, even when others don't. There have also been plenty of lessons to be learned about cash. If you've managed to 'cut your coat to suit your cloth' these past few years, then good for you – your bank account will thank you for it in future. Your financial future is looking more secure as a result, too.

More to learn?

If you're still overdrawn and your credit cards are maxed out, or you still think nobody loves you, then you haven't quite taken these important lessons on board. You need to get to know and respect your budgets. The rest of your life will be better if you can wrap your head around your incomings and outgoings. You could also take evening classes to boost your confidence, or try reading some self-help books.

Plus points

Learn to love yourself, and other people will follow suit.

SCORPIO

Your lesson

Saturn has been right there in your sign since 2012, so if the past couple of years have felt tough across the board, that's exactly why. So is Saturn's departure a good thing? Well, yes and no. Yes, because your life will get easier, and no because Saturn has taught you a lot. Hopefully you've learned about the benefits of hard work, and how much better life is when you handle things maturely (no Scorpionic sulking) and face facts. In other words, your whole life has been a big lesson. And for that, you can thank Saturn.

More to learn?

If you're still a bit stroppy or lazy, or just feeling low, try to make an effort to change that. After September, Saturn won't be back in your sign for another 30 years, so this is a last chance to show just what you're made of. And after two years of Saturn in your sign, you're made of stern stuff.

Plus points

Improvements will be solid and long-lasting if you can take all this on board now.

AQUARIUS

Your lesson

Saturn has been in your career zone for the past two years. You'll have had a lot of pressure on you at work, and maybe at home too. You might have felt that you needed to impress your boss or your clients, so you've had your nose to the grindstone. This has a knock-on effect in your life as a whole. The intense pressure Saturn has been putting on you for these two years has enhanced your positive traits, just as polishing a diamond brings out its beauty.

More to learn?

If you haven't been working that hard and your career still feels like a bit of a mess, write a list of your ambitions, along with action points to set out how you can make them happen. Talk to a career counsellor if you're in the dark about what you want to do. If you suspect you could work better in another environment, you could also talk to your boss.

Plus points

Saturn is not out to get you. He just wants to give you the tools to make your dreams come true.

PISCES

Your lesson

What do you really think? Forget about all the teachers and gurus and life guides, what's your view of the world? Saturn's mission for the past two years has been to help you take ownership of yourself and your thoughts. You need to develop your own way of viewing the world, rather than seeing it how parents or teachers might have taught you to. If life is a game, then Saturn has been teaching you to play it. You have been made stronger, and now the coming two years will challenge you to show the world what you've got.

More to learn?

If you're still a little blinkered or narrow-minded, if you still give your power away, then you have some work to do. You need to cut your ties with the people you think are better than you, at least for a while. Learn to stand on your own two feet and be strong in your own convictions.

Plus points

By the end of Saturn's time in Scorpio, you should have nothing to fear except fear itself.
